Orthodox Christianity

An ever-growing number of people from various backgrounds are becoming interested in the Orthodox Church. These individuals are discovering the ancient faith and rich traditions of the Orthodox Church. They are attracted by her mystical vision of God and His Kingdom, by the beauty of her worship, by the purity of her Christian faith, and by her continuity with the past. These are only some of the treasures of the Church, which has a history reaching back to the time of the Apostles.

The Orthodox Church begins with Jesus Christ and His Apostles. The Apostles appointed successors, known as bishops, and they in turn appointed other bishops in a process known as Apostolic succession. Over time, five Patriachates were established to organize the Christian world, and four of these ancient Patriarchates remain Orthodox today.

Orthodox Christianity reached its present form in Late Antiquity, during the 3rd to 8th centuries. During this time, Eucemical Councils were held to define what became worship practices, including the liturgies and the major holidays of the Church.

The first Orthodox Christians arrived in the New World in 1768, establishing a colony near the present city of St. Augustine, Florida. Today, about 1 million Americans are proud to call themselves Orthodox Christians.
